How to Wash Bras and Shapewear So They Last for Years

Delicate bras air-drying on a rack near a sunny window with gentle detergent

The average bra dies at around 8 months. It should live 2–3 years. The difference isn't the bra — it's the laundry.

Elastane, the fiber that gives bras and shapewear their stretch and recovery, has two mortal enemies: heat and agitation. Nearly everything about a standard wash cycle involves both. Here's the routine that avoids them, and it takes less effort than you think.

How often to wash (less than you think)

  • Bras: every 2–3 wears. Daily washing wears out elastic faster than skin oils do.
  • Shapewear: every wear — it sits tight against skin and absorbs more.
  • Adhesive bras: after every wear, no exceptions — the adhesive depends on it (details in our sticky bra guide).

The 5-minute hand wash (gold standard)

  1. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water — never hot.
  2. Add a small amount of gentle detergent. Skip fabric softener forever: it coats elastic fibers and kills their recovery.
  3. Submerge, swish gently, and let soak 10–15 minutes.
  4. Rinse cool until the water runs clear.
  5. Press water out between your palms or a towel. Never wring or twist — twisting is a death sentence for molded cups and compression panels.

Machine washing (acceptable, with rules)

Real life exists. If you machine wash: hook the band closed, put each piece in a mesh laundry bag, use the delicate cycle, cold water, gentle detergent. Never with towels or jeans — zippers and friction chew up delicate fabric.

Molded and padded cups — like our T-Shirt Bra — keep their shape dramatically longer hand-washed.

Drying: where most damage happens

The dryer is the single biggest bra killer. Heat breaks down elastane permanently — one hot cycle can age a bra a year. Always air dry:

  • Lay flat or drape over a rack — don't hang bras by the straps (wet fabric is heavy, straps stretch).
  • Shapewear: flat on a towel, away from radiators and direct sun.
  • Reshape cups with your fingers while damp.

Storage and rotation

  • Never fold cups into each other — it creases the molding permanently. Store flat or nested upright.
  • Rotate at least 3 bras — elastic needs 24h to recover between wears. This alone can double a bra's life.

When to let go

Replace when: the band no longer feels snug on the tightest hook, cups are creased or bubbled, or shapewear stops feeling compressive. And if every bra seems to wear out fast in the same spot, it may be a fit issue — re-check with our 2-minute sizing guide.

FAQ

Can I wash shapewear with regular clothes?

In a mesh bag on delicate, yes — but never with heavy or zippered items, and never in warm water.

What detergent is best?

Any gentle or lingerie-specific detergent. Avoid anything with bleach or fabric softener.

Why does my shapewear feel looser after months?

Cumulative heat and agitation relax the compression fibers. Cold wash and flat drying preserve compression the longest.
